NEW ULM – Mankato Loyola had three players in double figures as the Crusaders defeated New Ulm Cathedral 76-51 Friday night in non-conference boys basketball.

Loyola opened the game by hitting two 3-pointers for an early 6-0 lead.

The Crusaders implemented a full-court press that bothered the Greyhounds. It contributed to Cathedral missing shots.

Loyola built a 40-19 lead and it led 48-26 at halftime.

Evan Ellingsworth and Carson Seifert opened the second half by scoring 3-pointers to build a 54-28 lead.

The Greyhounds refused to quit, and they kept trying to come back. But the Crusaders’ swarming defense, rebounding and quick pace ended any hopes of a Greyhounds comeback.

“We did do a better job in the second half,” Cathedral coach Paul Hazuka said. “They pushed the ball offensively, and they pushed the ball at a high pace. They played solid defense, and they bothered us a bit with their press.”

Free throws also contributed to Loyola’s win as the Crusaders made 18-of-28 from the line.

Jeff Osborne led Cathedral with 12 points.

Seifert paced Loyola with 31 points. Conner Tanhoff added 16 points and Ellingworth scored 11 points.

The Greyhounds (1-6, 1-3) travel to Sleepy Eye Tuesday night for a Tomahawk Conference game.
