SE police arrest juvenile for school shooting threats

SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye Police arrested a male juvenile around noon on Saturday for allegedly making school shooting threats on Facebook.

Police were notified on Friday that shooting threats had been posted on a Facebook page. Authorities were not releasing details Saturday, but the threats were directed at several area schools, investigators said in a press release Saturday.

Sleepy Eye Police investigated the threats, and the evidence was reviewed with the Brown County Attorney’s Office. A juvenile male suspect was taken into custody around noon on Saturday.

The suspect was transported by the Sleepy Eye Police Department to the Prairie Lakes Detention Center in Willmar. Charges and expected to be filed Monday by the Brown County Attorney’s Office.

Area schools are planning to open as usual on Monday, with extra security precautions in place.

Sleepy Eye Public School Superintendent John Cselovszki sent an electronic message throughout the school district that read, “Recently the police notified Sleepy Eye Public Schools about a threat made against the school. Police currently have a suspect in custody. We would like everyone to be aware that Sleepy Eye Public Schools are following established procedures to respond to the threat. School will resume normally on Monday with increased security.”

New Ulm Public School Superintendent Harold Remme sent a similar message to parents Saturday that read “A Facebook message with a shooter threat has been discovered by law enforcement. The message referenced a neighboring school district as the initial target with comments about similar actions in surrounding schools.

“Please be advised the person involved in making the Facebook comment has been apprehended by law enforcement, and charged. The author of the Facebook statement is now in custody of law enforcement. As a safety precaution, additional security measures will be in place as students enter ISD 88 schools on Monday morning, Jan. 7. Thank you for your concern and understanding of this matter.”
