MLC women pick up UMAC win over Bethany; men lose to BLC
MANKATO – The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team won its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener at Bethany Lutheran College by the score of 69-55 Tuesday night.
Defense led the way for MLC, as the Knights forced 17 turnovers and kept the Vikings under 30 percent from the field.
The Knights trailed 9-7 early in the game, but quickly took the lead and didn’t look back the rest of the way. MLC never trailed in the final 37 minutes of the game, taking a 38-28 lead at the half and never allowing the Vikings to cut the lead below four in the second half on the way to the win.
Leah Nass scored 14 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Joining Nass in double figures were Rebecca Engelbrecht and Brittney Gossen with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
MLC (3-9, 1-0) will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Northwestern.
MLC men lose to BLC
MANKATO – The MLC men’s basketball team fell behind early and was never able to come back in an 85-49 loss at Bethany Lutheran in the UMAC opener Tuesday.
The Knights never led in the game, as the Vikings jumped out to a 24-7 lead early in the first half and continued to build off that momentum on the way to a 47-20 halftime lead.
Galen Holzhueter finished as the high scorer for MLC with 12 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Justin Eternick finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
MLC (1-11, 0-1) will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Northwestern.
