James “Jim” Eckstein

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – James “Jim” Eckstein, 70, of Hot Springs, S.D., formerly of Hector, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Hot Springs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hector. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Carl O. Potter American Legion Post 135 of Hector, and the Fairfax Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hector.

Funeral arrangements are with the Hughes-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hector.

Memorials are preferred.

James Leonard Eckstein was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Sleepy Eye, to Anton and Laura (Schiller) Eckstein.

He served United States Navy from Nov. 16, 1964, until Nov. 18, 1968, and received various medals, including three bronze stars.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jan Eckstein, of Hot Springs; stepsons: Dan Madden and Scott Madden, both of Worland, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Bridget Paich of Douglas, Wyo.; eight stepgrandchildren; a brother, Melvin Eckstein of Fairfax, and a sister, Gladys Portner of New Ulm.
