New Ulm girls fall to Saints

NEW ULM – It was Oliva Hass and Tailor Raymond versus the New Ulm girls basketball team Friday night.

And the St. Peter duo won.

Hass and Raymond combined for 31 points as the Saints defeated the Eagles 63-24 in a South Central Conference match-up.

Hunter Ahlness and Nicole Dittrich were the top scorers for New Ulm with seven and six points, respectively.

Hass scored 17 for the Saints while Raymond had 14 and Kelsey Carpenter added nine.

Ahlness kept her trend of nailing long 2-pointers going with a bucket in the opening minute and Ellie Schneider grabbed an offensive board and put it back four minutes in to cut St. Peter’s lead to 8-4.

Schneider powered her way in for another basket five minutes later and following a score from Hass, Taylor Bolduan hit a 3-pointer and slashed the deficit to 18-9.

Alley Grejtek found Lizzie Rummel open under the basket with four minutes remaining for a relatively easy basket and Ahlness added a 3-pointer with 2:30 left. St. Peter shut out the Eagles for the rest of the half and took a comfortable 38-16 lead into the break.

St. Peter took it to the Eagles to open the second half as a 19-0 run in the first six and a half minutes blew the game open and activated the running-clock mercy rule.

The Eagles managed to score just eight points in the second half. Dittrich stopped the bleeding with a jumper and Molly Shaul had a nice crossover leading to a score with six minutes to go.

Dittrich added two more buckets in the final five minutes as the Saints improved to 5-1 in the conference.

“We knew this was going to be a physical game – they’re big, very talented, so our game was just shut down,” New Ulm assistant coach Lon Ahlness said. “We’re young, inexperienced and not that big and we gotta make our shots. We just gotta keep working, that’s all we can do.”

New Ulm will play two home games this coming week. The Eagles host Redwood Valley Tuesday and St. James Thursday.
