Rolling Thunder tourney hits town
NEW ULM – The New Ulm Rolling Thunder wrestling club held a tournament at New Ulm High School on Saturday morning and the tournament hosted an estimated 175 youth wrestlers from across southern Minnesota.
Jason Engel, who is the President of the Rolling Thunder, said there were teams from New Ulm, Le Center, Madelia and Lake Crystal.
The tournament itself featured wrestlers as young as pre-kindergarten all the way up to sixth grade.
“It went good, there was a lot of good competition, and the top three teams there [points-wise] were Le Center, New Ulm and Madelia,” Engel said.?
Engel said there was plenty of help from volunteers.
“We had a lot of parent involvement and a lot of past members and past parents helping out,” Engel said. “We had the high school wrestlers helping out and the wrestling parents from the present and the past helped out.
The youth wrestlers were awarded with t-shirts and trophies, depending on how they placed at the tournament. Engel said each wrestler that places first through fourth gets an award.
While the event was a lot of work to put on, Engle said that it’s always fun getting together with the wrestling community.
“It’s a lot of fun, a lot of good times getting all these people together,” Engel said.?”For them to see how the club is doing is really good and the kids really seem to enjoy the competition.”
