DNR names Abraham TIP Officer of the Year

ST. PAUL – Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officer Greg Abraham of New Ulm has been named the 2012 Turn In Poachers (TIP) “Joe Alexander” Conservation Officer of the Year.

Abraham is a 32-year DNR employee with a reputation as a proven leader, distinguished marksman, exceptionally skilled investigator and standout officer, said Col. Jim Konrad, DNR Enforcement Division director. “He’s one of the hardest working, motivated self-starters I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing and he deserves this much coveted award from TIP.”

The award is presented annually to one conservation officer who best represents the mission of TIP during the course of duties. The award is named in honor of past conservation officer and DNR Commissioner Joe Alexander, who was admired by his peers for his dedication and focused concern for natural resources.

Abraham’s first TIP call came shortly after the program started in 1981.

“I can still remember most every detail of the reported violation, including the names of the two individuals involved,” Abraham said. “Each has since used TIP to report other violators, which is not uncommon.”

Abraham added, “I’ve also found that after someone uses TIP to report a violation and finds that their call matters, they are very likely to call me directly in the future if and when they come across another violation.”

Information received from a call can also be useful in making cases years later.

“Of all the game and fish violations I’ve been associated with, some of the most egregious have been solved using information obtained by TIP calls,” Abraham said.

TIP is a private nonprofit organization operating on private donations. The organization accomplishes its mission of protecting and preserving Minnesota’s natural resources by providing educational materials and by funding rewards paid to citizens who call in tips that lead to arrests of game law violators.

People can stop poachers in their tracks by reporting natural resource violations to TIP at 800-652-9093 or #TIP for most cell phone users.
