PREP BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Hot-handed Saints rout Eagles 83-38

NEW ULM – There is only really one statistic that tells the story of the New Ulm Eagles boys’ basketball game with St. Peter Tuesday night.

New Ulm recorded its only back-to-back baskets in the game at the 15:10 mark of the second half when the Eagles’ Tanner Kluis and Blake Piotter scored baskets.

Before those two hoops, St. Peter had built a commanding 59-15 lead and went on to an 83-38 win over the Eagles in South Central Conference basketball action.

Peter Kruize led the Saints (18-2, 7-1) with a game-high 21 points.

Jackson Yackley paced the Eagles (5-16, 3-6) with eight points.

“They are a very good team,” New Ulm coach Steve Foley said. “They shot the ball very well in the game. They hit every open shot (15-of-20 in the first half), but that is the way the game is sometimes.”

While the Saints shot the ball well in the first 18 minutes, New Ulm was on the opposite end of the spectrum.

The Eagles made just 3-of-25 shots from the field.

Combine those two stats and you have a 52-15 St. Peter lead at halftime.

“I thought that we had some good looks at shots tonight,” Foley said. “But we just did not make shots. They played good defense, but we had some good looks. We have to capitalize on those looks.”

One of the problems that New Ulm had in the game came in the form of Kruize. The 6-foot-8 center had his way on offense (19 first-half points) and on defense, where he intimidated New Ulm shooters.

“We let him get position way too easy,” Foley said. “We let him get that low block. We talked about meeting him up the lane and not letting him get position. Unfortunately he got position way too often.”

St. Peter added to its 52-15 halftime lead by scoring the first seven points of the second half before Kluis and Piotter’s baskets made it 59-19.

A Cody Erickson 3-pointer made it 68-19 for the Saints.

The lead was aided by more cold shooting by the Eagles, who made just three of 15 shots as the Saints upped the lead to 74-27.
