MLC men close season with loss against Cougars

MORRIS – The Martin Luther College men’s basketball team finished its season with a 94-67 loss at the University of Minnesota, Morris on Saturday.

The game mirrored the first meeting between the two teams, with Morris breaking open a close game after 20 minutes with a strong second half.

The Cougars started the game on a roll, taking a 21-7 lead with 11:29 to play before the Knights settled down and started to make a run of their own, cutting the Cougar lead to just six points at 42-36 at the break.

MLC was still within striking distance near the midway point of the second half, trailing 56-46 with 12:17 to play in the game, but the Cougars put the game away with a 19-4 run over the next 4:13 of game action to build their lead to 25 points on the way to the win.

Morris controlled the game down low, outscoring MLC 60-28 in the paint, which also led to success from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half as the MLC defense began to collapse inside. The Cougars shot 57.6 percent overall, compared to 38.7 percent for MLC.

Galen Holzhueter finished as the high scorer for MLC with 21 points, while Kaleb Buch and Luke Rothe each added 13 points.

With the loss, MLC finished the season with a record of 4-21 overall and 3-11 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. UMM improved to 14-11 on the season and 9-5 in conference action with the win.
