Roufs wins trip to International Science Fair
MANKATO – Cathedral High School sophomore Ellen Roufs won a second straight trip to the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP) at the South Central/South West Regional Science Fair competition held Saturday at Minnesota State University/ Mankato.
Roufs and two other regional winners will compete with projects from across the world. Her project, “Energy from Mud,” dealt with creating fuel cells that produced electricity from benthic mud and the present bacteria.
The international event is scheduled for May 8-13 in Houston.
Twenty-eight students from New Ulm Cathedral participated in the regional competition.
CHS students took home 21 sponsored “special awards,” including a $250 prize to seventh-grader Becca Schwarz

CHS Science Fair Coordinator Tim Guldan was presented with the “Educator Award” from the CT Wang Family Endowment.
