PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Falcons, Tigers on opposite sides of overtime thrillers
RRC boys 62, WWG 53 (OT)
LAMBERTON – Red Rock Central played a dominant overtime period to defeat Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Tuesday in a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball game.
WWG’s Shane Buchman made a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 50-50, with the Falcons unable to get a good shot off before time expired.
RRC’s Austin Price hit a 3 to begin overtime, after which the Falcons shot 9-of-14 from the free throw line to ice the contest.
Jeff DeCock led RRC with 24 points, with Price adding 15 points – which he amassed by making five 3-pointers. Henry Rogotzke added six points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four blocks for the Falcons.
Buchman had 20 points for the Chargers and teammate Alex Knutson added 18 points.
RRC (13-9, 8-6) will host Fulda in Lamberton on Friday.
St. Clair boys 75, Springfield 74 (OT)
SPRINGFIELD – St. Clair edged Springfield in overtime Tuesday night in a non-conference boys basketball game.
Christopher Kretsch and Cole Milbrath each scored 27 points for the Tigers. Tyler Vogel added 12 points.
Ryan Kruse and Tyler Fandrich each scored 22 points and Austin Nagel added 12 points for St. Clair.
Springfield (16-6, 11-3) hosts Wabasso (8-15, 5-10) Friday night.
T/ML boys 65, Madelia 48
MADELIA – Truman/Martin Luther went on a 14-6 run in the second half en route to a win against Madelia Tuesday night in a non-conference boys basketball game.
Jack Bergeman led the Blackhawks with 14 points and Jordan Henry added 10 points.
Madelia (3-17, 2-9) travels to Sleepy Eye (8-14, 5-10) Friday night for a non-conference game.
W-M boys 67, Sibley East 60
ARLINGTON – Watertown-Mayer defeated Sibley East Tuesday night in a Minnesota River Conference boys basketball game.
Tyler Bates was the top scorer with 24 points for the Wolverines. Teammate Sam Harrison added 11 points.
Jacob Wandersee scored 20 points for Watertown-Mayer, while Luke Sandquist scored 15 points and Jacob Grotbo added 12 points.
Sibley East ( 12-9, 7-6) plays at Norwood-Young America Friday night.
Sleepy Eye girls 57, Madelia 46
SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye defeated Madelia Tuesday night in a non-conference girls basketball game.
Claire Krumbach and Josie Schieffert each scored 15 points for Sleepy Eye, with McKayla Ahlrich adding 11 points. Krumbach also had 13 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Schieffert added 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Cinthia Sotelo led Madelia with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Sleepy Eye (8-17, 3-13) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A, North Sub-section tournament.
Springfield girls 52, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 50
TRACY – Sam Groebner sank a five-foot shot with seven seconds left in the game to lift Springfield over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday night in a non-conference girls basketball game.
Springfield senior Jordan Salonek had 10 points, six steals, five rebounds and five assists, one of which was on Groebner’s winning shot.
Springfield (14-10, 9-7) hosts Martin Luther Feb. 26 in Section 2A, North Sub-section tournament action.
