NUACT holding auditions for ‘The Front Page’

NEW ULM – New Ulm Actors Community Theater will hold open auditions for all roles in “The Front Page,” a fast-paced comedy directed by Paul Warshauer,

Warshauer adapted his version from the 1928 play by Ben Hecht and the 1939 Columbia Pictures film version starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell.

No acting experience is necessary, and there is nothing to prepare. Materials will be provided at auditions.

“Come and have fun in New Ulm’s own community theater,” said Warshauer. “Parts are available for men and women ages 18-75.”

Performances are slated for May 16-20. Most rehearsals are on Tuesday nights and Saturdays. The complete rehearsal schedule is available at auditions. Those auditioning are strongly encouraged to bring their schedules and calendars along.

This classic screwball comedy is set in 1931 in the dingy Press Room of Chicago’s Criminal Courts Building, overlooking the gallows behind the Cook County Jail. Walter Burns, a hard-boiled editor for The Morning Post, learns his ex-wife and former star reporter, Hildegard “Hildy” Johnson, is about to marry bland insurance man Bruce Baldwin and settle down to a quiet life as a wife and mother.

Burns determines to sabotage these plans, enticing the reluctant Hildy to cover one last story, the upcoming execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams.

When Williams escapes from the bumbling sheriff, and practically falls into Hildy’s lap, the lure of a big scoop proves too much for her.

The audience will love the twists and turns the play takes as every newsman wants to get on “the Front Page!”
