Hildegard Saffert

NEW?ULM – Hildegard Saffert, 89, of New Ulm, died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm with Monsignor Douglas Grams celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of Mass at church on Thursday. The Christian Mothers Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cathedral.

Hildegard is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Bill Baumann of Hutchinson, Deb and Rick Cordes of Brooklyn Park; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and George Reiser of New Ulm, Melvin Klinkner of Stewart, Frank Saffert of New Ulm; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Gladys Portner, Rosadell Portner, Arleta Portner, all of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, Marie Schimschock and Mathilda Weymann, both of New Ulm.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ambrose; sister, Alyce Klinkner; and by her brothers, Roman, Joe and Norman Portner.

Hildegard Esther Portner was born April 25, 1923 in New Ulm to Herman and Hilda (Hamann) Portner. She attended Brown County District 10 School in Sigel Township and then Holy Trinity Grade School. Hildegard was united in marriage to Ambrose Saffert on June 8, 1943 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. She farmed alongside her husband for 53 years. Hildegard enjoyed the hobby of quilting, an interest she shared with her daughters. She generously shared what she made with family, friends and the community.

Hildegard was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was in charge of funeral lunches for 30 years and served as chairman of the Mission Sewing for several years. She was also a member of the St. Joseph’s St. Elizabeth’s Catholic United and the Christian Mothers Society.
