Sleepy Eye School Board OKs revised budget
SLEEPY EYE – The District 84 Board of Education approved the revised 2012-2013 school budget on Thursday.
A collection of combined costs placed the District 84 budget at a deficit of $175,131 for the year, with about $100,479 of the cost from new developments.
The biggest item was the school having approximately nine fewer students this year than planned, resulting in $54,000 less in state funding. The cost was partially offset by the only gain in the revision, which was the school receiving $31,000 more in Title I and II funding than expected.
Several of the added costs were due to expenditures being higher than projected. The two biggest items were an additional $37,305 in Special Education due to hiring two more paraprofessionals and a prorated teacher; and an additional $19,00 in Sites and Building for safety improvements that included eight to 10 newly installed security cameras and an amplifier. The rest of the costs were due to miscellaneous items coming in higher than expected, such as an additional $15,000 under Legal fees.
The school will seek to even out the costs with savings throughout the remainder of the year. The total budget is approximately $6 million for the year.
