Council approves sale of property for apartments
NEW ULM One of the first steps in the construction of a multi-family apartment building on the southern edge of downtown New Ulm was taken Tuesday when the City Council approved the sale of the empty City lot near Ralph’s Shoe Repair on 1st South Street and Minnesota Street to Eagle Development, LLC.
The site sold for $125,000. The apartment project is scheduled to start in September.
The property was purchased in 1994 and 2001 by the City for future development. The site is currently used for free parking year round and the Farmers Market one night per week during the summer months.
The City will work with the Farmers Market and those who use the site for parking to find a new location.
In other action, the council approved an ordinance allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages at amateur athletic events in city event facilities.
The new ordinance modifies City Code, which currently prohibited selling alcohol at amateur athletic events. The Goosetown Roller Girls requested the change to allow the sale of alcohol at their home meets. They said alcohol sales would help grow their fan base and also benefit local businesses.
The current City Code was adopted years ago to match similarly introduced state requirements. However, the wording of the limitation made New Ulm’s requirements more strick than the state, which only prohibits alcohol at youth amateur athletic events. Roller Girls participants testified at a previous Council meeting that their team members are 21-years old and older.
The new ordinance only prohibits alcohol sales at youth amateur athletic events in which the participants are age 18 or younger. The enactment of the ordinance is not expected to be effective for the Roller Girls’ first home meet, but it will be in place for future events.
