Redwood Valley bows out of state tourney with double overtime loss
MINNEAPOLIS – Redwood Valley suffered a 64-55 loss in double overtime against Litchfield in the first round of the Class AA boys’ basketball state tournament Wednesday at Williams Arena.
Redwood Valley, which was making its seventh appearance in the state tournament, ends the season with a 24-6 record.
Senior guard Alec Koster provided a game-high 27 points for the Cardinals, but Redwood Valley went cold at the wrong time as the Dragons scored the final 10 points of the second overtime to earn the victory.
Litchfield held a 26-14 lead late in the first half, but the Cardinals rallied with a 24-4 run to take a 38-30 lead midway through the second half.
Redwood Valley saw a late lead slip away when Litchfield senior Zach Whitchurch hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 1:53 remaining in regulation.
The Dragons were led in the game by senior guard Zach Kinny with 18 points. Senior forward Riley Pater added 11 points and nine rebounds and senior guard Dylan Koll contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
Koster shot 6-of-16 from behind the 3-point line in his 27-point performance for Redwood Valley and added seven rebounds. Steven Runkel contributed 12 points for the Cardinals and senior forward RJ Juell had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Litchfield (25-5) will play Esko in the semifinals at 8 p.m. on Friday at Target Center. Minnehaha will play Annandale in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday at Target Center.
Perham, Byron and Hayfield were also eliminated on Wednesday.
