MLC softball loses two against BLC in rescheduled UMAC opener

NEW ULM – The Martin Luther College softball team started its home schedule unexpectedly Wednesday with a pair of losses to Bethany Lutheran College by the scores of 4-1 and 2-0.

The two teams were scheduled to play one Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game today at BLC, but unplayable field conditions for the Vikings moved the game to New Ulm, with a second non-conference game added to make it a doubleheader.

MLC was held hitless in the opening game in a 4-1 loss to the Vikings.

The Knights took advantage of a Viking miscue in the second inning, which allowed Andrea Biedenbender to put the Knights ahead 1-0, but BLC scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings off MLC starter Kathryn Marquardt on the way to the Game 1 win.

Marquardt dropped to 1-3 on the season, allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks in six innings of work.

BLC starter Shannon Heitz held the Knights without a hit, although MLC did have four walks in the game.

Bethany was able to keep the MLC bats silent in the second game as well on the way to a 2-0 win to finish the doubleheader sweep.

Vikings’ starting pitcher Nicole Starkson struck out 15 batters and held MLC to four hits and two walks in the game.

MLC starting pitcher Laura Miller pitched all six innings, allowing one run apiece in the third and fourth innings as she dropped to 1-3 on the season. She struck out five and walked only two on the day.

Emily Waldek finished with three of MLC’s four hits in the game, while Amber Krause smashed a double for the final hit of the day for the Knights.

MLC (4-6 overall, 0-1 in UMAC play) will return to action at 3:30 p.m. today when it hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering for a doubleheader.
