Springfield couple featured in documentary at film festival
SPRINGFIELD – The work of a film maker with Springfield roots is part of the 2013 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.
Lucas Bryce, who now lives in Los Angeles, created “Camelina: Seed to Oil,” an eight-minute documentary in the Minnesota-made, short, entrant category of the contest.
Last April, Bryce met Kathleen and Justin Smith and her parents Phil and Deb Batalden of Lamberton, when his family sought locally grown, organic ingredients for their restaurant (Solar’s Real Food) in Springfield.
As Bryce learned more about the Smiths’ ideas and passion for aligning their livelihood with their values, he asked them to take part in a film about their family farms near Lamberton, Walnut Grove and the Eastside Co-op in Minneapolis.
“One of the things that captivated me about their story was their commitment to working together as a family to create a sustainable lifestyle and future for the youngest generation of their family,” Bryce said. “I wanted to capture their essence and share their story with others who might be seeking those values in their life. I was thrilled to hear the film was accepted at the Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival. I’m excited to share the film with a larger audience.”
Bryce will show the film and answer questions beginning at 5:10 p.m., Monday, April 22, at St. Anthony Theater, 115 S.E. Main St., Minneapolis. Tickets are $12 at the box office or online at www.stanthonymaintheater.com/.
Other free screenings will be held at 9:15 p.m., Friday, April 26 at Solar’s Real Food, 623 W Rock St., Springfield. Local food vendor samples will be available.
Bryce will answer questions; and at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at the Nicollet County Historical Society Treaty Site History Center, 1851 N Minnesota Ave., St. Peter. Local food vendor samples, coffee samples from River Rock Coffee, questions and answers and a panel discussion on food topics will be held. Panelists will include local farmers, suppliers and restauranteurs.
