Nicollet falls in Valley Conference baseball opener, 3-2

GHEC/ML/T 3, Nicollet 2

TRUMAN – Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman defeated Nicollet in its first game of the regular season on Tuesday afternoon.

Matt Christiansen picked up the loss while striking out nine batters and allowing just three hits and two walks. Jay Hendrycks was 1-for-2 and Carter Strunk was 1-for-3

Nicollet (0-1) will host Maple River next Tuesday in another Valley Conference game.

NU 4, BEA 0

NU 10, BEA 1

BLUE EARTH – The New Ulm baseball team earned a South Central Conference doubleheader sweep over Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.

Chase Meyer picked up the win in Game 1 while allowing just four hits in six innings and striking out nine batters. He also had two doubles and an RBI. Cole Dulas had an RBI double and Brach Kraus was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In the second game, Tanner Kluis picked up the win for the Eagles with six strikeouts in five innings while allowing four hits.

Grant Kannegiesser was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in while Judd Davis had a hit and an RBI.

New Ulm (3-0) will play Holy Family Catholic on Friday at the Mankato Tournament.

Prep Softball:

NU 16, BEA 1, 5 inn.

BLUE EARTH – The New Ulm softball team dominated Blue Earth Area in its first game of the season in South Central Conference action.

Sydney Schuck picked up the win in four innings of work allowing just the one run while striking out seven.

Abby Kamm led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 4-for-5 with four runs, three RBIs and three stolen bases.

Rachel Strandmark was 2-for-3 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. Briana Sieve was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Kali Denn had two hits, two RBIs and one run.

New Ulm improves to 1-0 and will play at Waseca on Thursday.

M-T 6, ML/GHEC 5

TRUMAN – Madelia-Truman defeated Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain in Valley Conference softball Tuesday.

Taylor Thomas earned the win for the Jayhawks, going five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out four.

Hannah Hartman was 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI. She scored two runs. Savannah Stevens had a hit and an RBI.

The Jayhawks (2-1, 1-0) are at St. Clair Friday.
