CROP Hunger Walk set for May 5

NEW ULM – An ecumenical, community partnership that has made a significant local impact on those in need since 1991, begins at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 5 at the Putting Green.

The New Ulm CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) Hunger Walk has raised about $46,000 for the local emergency food shelf over the past 22 years.

Aided by donations from local business and industry, the hunger walk was the only local recipient of the Church World Service (CWS) program that assists food banks, community gardens, refugee resettlement, disaster relief and land mine removal, among other needs. The CWS was founded in 1947 to assist World War II recovery efforts.

Exceptions took place in 1997 and 1998 when 75 percent of locally-raised funds were earmarked for Brown County flood and tornado relief, respectively.

The New Ulm walk will follow the bike trail from Putting Green to German Park and back. One-fourth of the funds raised will go to the local food shelf. Remaining funds will go to the needy across the country and world.

New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf Acting Director Brad Kirk said people in need are encouraged to visit the food shelf located at 1305 S. Valley. Business hours are noon to 3 p.m., Monday and Wednesday and 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. Call 507-354-7668 for more information.

Food and beverages are available at no cost to low income clients who live in Independent School District 88. This includes the cities of New Ulm, Hanska, Lafayette, Courtland, Essig and Searles and surrounding area.

Clients must be able to show proof of residency and have photo identification.

Anyone wishing to donate to the CROP Hunger Walk but will not be at the walk can call chairperson Chris Rosenhamer at 359-7052. Other New Ulm CROP Hunger Walk Committee members are Chris Loetscher, Molly Schultz, Joan Lindholm, Dr. Mario DeSouza, Eileen Campbell, Marka Stocker, Jeanie Hinsman and Marlys Zetah.
