Knights sweep MVL

NEW ULM – Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 3-0 and 7-5 to complete the sweep in their first Tomahawk Conference games of the year.

St. Mary’s Jordan Anderson gave up a leadoff single to Kris Goetzke to start the game, but it was the only hit he gave up the whole game. Anderson pitched a complete game shutout with four walks and six strikeouts to earn the win.

“I felt pretty good for the first time (pitching) outside today,” Anderson said. “I had some great defense behind me.”

The Knights scored single runs in the first and third innings off of RBIs by sophomore Brandon Helget. They got one more run on the board in the fourth on an RBI by junior Mike Hirsch.

Richard Jensen took the loss for MVL. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits, one walk, one hit batter. Jensen struck out three batters.

Junior Mike Zinniel earned the win for St. Mary’s in the second game. Zinniel gave up four earned runs on eight hits, one walk, and one hit batter. He struck out three.

The Knights took an early four-run lead in the third inning and added three more over the fourth and fifth innings to put the game away.

The Chargers looked poised to make a comeback in the sixth when they scored three runs on RBIs by Chad Lease and Jake Mielke, but they fell short.

Hirsch came in to pitch for St. Mary’s with one out left in the sixth inning to finish out the game, and he picked up the four out save.

Nick Dewanz took the loss for MVL. He gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and three walks, while he struck out six batters.

“I was very pleased with our pitching and our defense today,” MVL head coach Jeff Schoenherr said. “(Jensen and Dewanz) did a great job coming out and throwing strikes, and our defense made some outstanding plays behind them.”

Anderson led the Knights at the plate going 5-for-8 with two doubles on the day.

“I felt pretty comfortable behind the plate today, and they kept throwing me strikes, so I kept trying to hit it,” Anderson said.

Tyler Mielke and Goetzke were the leading hitters for MVL with two singles on the day, each.

St. Mary’s (2-0) plays again today at home against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, while MVL (0-3) plays next Thursday at home against BLHS.
