‘Shatter the Silence’ to be presented May 6

NEW?ULM – Maria Willits will be sharing her personal story to help prevent suicide, access mental health resources and give hope to survivors in a presentation entitled ‘Shatter the Silence’ at 7 p.m., Monday May 6 in the DAC (former Junior High) Auditorium in New Ulm.

Willis will share her experience in losing a son to suicide and the difficult journey of recovery that her family has undertaken since her son’s death in 2009.

The presentation is a result of Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth being awarded the Chris Benz Memorial Fund Grant on behalf of District 88 through the Highway 10 Baseball Classic held in 2012 in Perham and New York Mills. Benz, a 17-year-old student at Robbinsdale High School took his own life in 2007.

Janet Benz, mother of Chris Benz, will make a presentation to Brown County Youth Council members and New Ulm Area SPOTS Troupe members who are working to bring the Yellow Ribbon suicide prevention program to District 88 schools.
