Cathedral sweeps Mustangs
NEW ULM – With the wind blowing out, New Ulm Cathedral senior Paige Pautzke figured Tuesday was the day to finally get that elusive first career home run.
Pautzke did just that, driving a Katie Kalenberg offering over the fence in left field for a three-run home run as the Greyhounds defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 12-1 in five innings Tuesday at Harman Park.
The Greyhounds defeated the Mustangs in the second game 34-2 in the second game.
Cathedral hit three three-run homers in the first game. Lisa Helget hit the first one in the second inning, her second career home run and second in less than a week. Pautzke followed with hers in the third inning and Abby Hauser came off the bench to hit one in the bottom of the fourth.
“Mr. Mertz [Cathedral coach Bob Mertz] told me that since the wind is blowing out, today would be a good day to do it [get her first career home run],” Pautzke said. “It felt pretty awesome. It was the one thing I needed to do and now I did it, so now the pressure’s off.”
Leah Krzmarzick earned the win for the Greyhounds. She went four innings, allowing five hits and no runs. Kristin Mohr pitched the fifth inning and gave up two hits and a run.
The Greyhounds scored six runs in the second inning, led by Helget’s blast. Anne Schwarz, Mohr and Pautzke also added an RBI in the inning. Pautzke’s home run in the third inning put Cathedral up 9-0 and Hauser delivered another three-run homer in the fourth for the final runs for the Greyhounds.
Cathedral finished the first game with 10 hits.
The Greyhounds took advantage of 21 walks in the second game. Schwarz had two hits and Hauser delivered another three-run home run.
