MVL sweeps Mustangs in Tomahawk battle

NEW ULM – Minnesota Valley Lutheran used a pair of solid pitching performances to sweep a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader over Buffalo Lake-Hector/Stewart Thursday afternoon at Mueller Park.

In game one, Richard Jensen scattered five hits in a 7-1 win while Nick Dewanz allowed just three hits in a 6-1 win in the nightcap.

Ryan Grunke and Dewanz each colleted two hits in the opening game and each drove in two runs.

In Game 2, Dewanz helped his own cause with three hits and drove in three runs.

“I was very happy with our play,” Chargers coach Jeff Schoenherr said. “Our pitchers came out and threw strikes (nine strikeouts for Jensen and five for Dewanz) and let the defense play behind them (with just one error in two games).”

MVL led 3-0 after two innings in game one thanks to a Dewanz’ RBI double and a DeAndre Parker single in the first inning. MVL added a run in the second on an error before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. A fielder’s choice, a two-run double from Ryan Grunke and an RBI single off of the bat of Dewanz gave the Chargers their seven runs.

In Game 2, MVL took a 2-1 lead on RBI singles from Dewanz in the first inning and third innings that countered a BLHS run that came on a Cory Kurth groundout.

The Chargers added a solo run in the top of the sixth on one of five errors by the Mustangs in the game.

Like the first game, MVL used another big inning, this time plating three runs in the top of the seventh.

A Dewanz’ base hit coupled with two more errors by the Mustangs closed out the scoring.

Mason Clark took the loss in Game 1 for BLHS, allowing seven runs on seven hits. In Game 2, Dylan Kalenberg was charged with the loss allowing five runs in 6 1/3 innings.
