MLC remains alive in UMAC Tournament
MORRIS – The Martin Luther College softball team opened the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament with a dominating 14-4 win in five innings over second-seeded Minnesota-Morris Friday before losing 4-1 to Bethany Lutheran College in the second game.
The Knights never trailed in the first game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of two Cougar errors before Sara Willems capped the inning with a three-run double with two outs to push the lead to five.
The 14 runs were more than enough for starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt, who allowed nine hits and pitched around three errors to give up four runs (three earned) in 5 innings.
MLC finished the game with 13 hits. All nine players in the MLC line-up scored at least once, while eight of the nine had at least one hit (Krause was the lone batter without a hit, but walked twice and also had a sacrifice fly to drive home a run). Emily Waldek led the MLC hitters with three hits, including one double and one triple, and also scored three times.
The Knights lost their round two game against Bethany Lutheran but remains alive in the double elimination tournament.
The game was scoreless through two innings, but the Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as they pieced together a rally with four hits and were helped by two MLC errors that led to both runs being unearned.
Laura Miller pitched five innings for MLC in the loss, dropping her record to 9-8 on the season after allowing all four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
MLC will play in the elimination game at 10 a.m. today against UM-Morris, which knocked off top-seeded St. Scholastica earlier in the day to advance. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game against Bethany Lutheran at 12 p.m., with a second game to follow if Bethany loses that game.
