Cathedral splits with Thunderbirds

NEW UM – New Ulm Cathedral was guilty of six errors in their first game with Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and fell 8-3 to the Thunderbirds in Tomahawk Conference baseball.

But in the nightcap, the Greyhounds took advantage of five Thunderbird errors to gain a split with a 10-3 win.

Tanner Buettner got the win for GFW in the first game, going the distance allowing just three hits. Gabe Knowles absorbed the loss for Cathedral permitting six runs on six hits in three innings. But he was not backed by his defense that had four errors in the first two innings as GFW scored six runs.

Jaden Katzenmeyer and Zach Black each had two hits for the Thunderbirds. Kolten Pingeon drove in three runs.

In the second game. Russ Hoffmann got the win, going five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Ryan Klabunde took the loss for GFW. He went 5 1/3 innings and was charged with nine runs.

Josh Kienlen led the Greyhounds with four hits with Jake Stadick and Brandon Beranek each collecting two hits.

Both GFW coach Jeff Seehafer and Cathedral’s Bob Weier saw some good and also bad things in their two games that saw a total of 15 total errors by the two teams.

“The first game shows what we can do when we put it together,” said Seehafer, whose team is now 3-6 on the season. “In the second game we made a couple of errors and we thought here we go again. We are happy that we won the first game -that was the one that counts in the conference. I was proud of the kids the way that we played.”

“We had an awful lot of errors in both games,” said Weier as Cathedral improved to 7-3. “In the first game they scored eight runs and I am not sure any of them were earned. We bounced back in the second game and hit the ball better (with 13 hits).”
