MVL picks up sweep over C/CM

NEW ULM – Minnesota Valley Lutheran needed two wins on Thursday to have a chance at keeping pace in the Tomahawk Conference. The Chargers did just that as MVL won both games decisively over Comfrey/Cedar Mountain, 16-0 in the first game and 13-2 in the second one.

The Chargers started the first game off with three runs in the first inning on three walks and two errors by the Rockets.

After winning pitcher Carlie Maasz got through the first two innings without surrendering a run, the Chargers bats heated up by scoring 13 runs in the next two innings.

“I thought we had good at bats,” Chargers head coach David Biedenbender said. “I thought we took what they gave us and Carlie pitched a good game for us.”

Maasz ended the first game with the win pitching all five innings allowing four hits and striking out five Rocket batters. Johanna Kuetter entered the game in the third inning and hit a two-run single as 16 MVL batters walked in the game.

The second game went pretty much the same for the Chargers as they recorded 19 walks this game.

Maasz got the second win of the day for her striking out six in the five innings she pitched. Johanna Kuetter recorded a double in the second game from the plate. The Chargers next play in a Tomahawk Conference showdown against New Ulm Cathedral.

“It will be a whole different level on Tuesday,” coach Biedenbender said. “If we keep having solid at-bats and field well we can be right with them”

MVL (4-5) will play host to Cathedral next Tuesday in a doubleheader.
