Greyhounds sweep MVL
NEW ULM – Collin Helget tossed a four-hitter in the first game and Gabe Knowles matched that in the nightcap as New Ulm Cathedral swept a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader from Minnesota Valley Lutheran 3-0 and 7-2.
In the opener, Helget struck out six in getting the shutout.
Rick Jensen took the opening game loss for MVL. He allowed three runs on 10 hits. Helget and Knowles each had two hits in the game.
In the second game, Knowles permitted singles from Ryan Grunke and Justin Bruns in the fourth inning when the Chargers scored both of their runs.
Russ Hoffmann, Brandon Beranek and Collin Helget each had two hits with Jake Stadick, Helget and Beranek each driving in two runs.
And as in any baseball game, the outcome boiled down to pitching.
“We got a good outing from Collin Helget in the first game,” Cathedral coach Bob Weier said. “He protected a three run lead late in the game. And Gabe Knowles showed a huge improvement from his last outing. He used his off-speed stuff more and pitched with more confidence.”
“We need to have our pitchers step up more,” MVL coach Jeff Schoenherr said. “We had some errors that cost us some runs.”
In the first game, a Beranek triple and a Knowles’ base hit made it 1-0 in the fourth inning before the Greyhounds added two more runs in the sixth on a Nate Palmer single and a Josh Dove sacrifice fly.
In Game 2, Cathedral took a 4-0 lead before the Chargers got to Knowles. A Helget sacrifice fly in the first made it 1-0 before a Jack Schwartz groundout added another run. A Jake Stadick base hit and a Helget single made it 4-0.
Cathedral added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth thanks to three MVL errors.
