MnDOT 20-year plan unveiling set

MANKATO – The unveiling date for the draft of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 20-year State Highway Investment Plan has been set for the end of June.

The State Highway Investment Plan (MnSHIP) connects the Minnesota GO 50-year Vision and policies in the Statewide Multimodal Transportation Plan to capital improvements projects for the state highway system. The plan sets the spending priorities for revenue available with regards to the order in which projects are addressed.

The Highway 14 Partnership, which has been advocating for a four-lane expansion of Highway 14 for more than 50 year to address economic and safety issues, has been actively lobbying for the highway’s inclusion in the plan. The organization’s strong response came after learning that MnDOT had initially planned to not include the project despite it being on previous plans. The organization argues that failure to be included in the 20-year plan will prevent the project from having access to any federal transportation money sent to Minnesota due to rules governing the use of the funds.

MnDOT will hold informational meetings about how it draws up its MnSHIP priorities and will host discussions on items related to the plan. The meetings will be held from late May to the end of June. The local meeting will be held in Mankato at the MnDOT District 7 Headquarters, 2151 Bassett Drive, on Monday, June 3 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Following the MnDOT tour, the draft of the MnSHIP plan will be released to the public at the end of June. Public hearings will be held and open up for comments on the plan.

The final version of the MnSHIP plan will then be released in August.
