New Ulm goes 1-1 in 3AA playoffs
MARSHALL – As impressive as New Ulm pitcher Sydney Schuck was in the pitcher’s circle on Saturday against Redwood Valley, she was even better with a bat in her hand.
The senior right-hander shut down the Cardinals’ bats, limiting them to just one hit over four innings as the Eagles won 11-1 in five innings in the Section 3AA playoffs.
Schuck also hit her first two career varsity home runs, one in the second and one in the third, as the Eagles hit three total in the game.
“It was kind of nice because I’ve been struggling hitting, and everyone else has picked me up and it was nice to help out too,” she said.?
She had a good mix of pitches working for her, striking out five in the win.
“I just felt like I could throw whatever I wanted, and they put some balls in play so I knew the defense would help me out.”
The Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, the big hit coming off the bat of Kali Denn, who drove home two on a single.
Schuck led off the second inning with a home run to left and Denn later hit a three-run home run to put the Eagles up 8-0 at that point.
Schuck’s second home run of the contest put the Eagles up 10-0 in the third inning and the Eagles added a run in the fourth for the final 11-0 margin.
Rachel Strandmark, Ellie Schneider, Denn, and Schuck each had two hits to lead the New Ulm attack.
New Ulm lost to Pipestone Area 7-0 in the second game. The Eagles now face the winner of Fairmont and Morris Area at 6:30 p.mm. Tuesday in Marshall.
