Doris J. Novotny

Doris J. Novotny, age 84 of Sleep Eye, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Oaklawn Heath Care Center in Mankato.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 28, from 4-7 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.

Funeral arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.

Doris was born on February 3, 1929, in International Falls, MN to Ray and Lillian Snyder. She graduated from International Falls High School in 1947 and from the University of Minnesota in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Business. She married Bob Novotny in August of 1951. She shared her love for music by teaching piano lessons for 50 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a past member of the Sleepy Eye and New Ulm community bands. She also played cello and violin in the New Ulm String Orchestra. The joys of her life included family, camping, traveling, golfing, reading, playing cards, dancing, wine-making, listening to classical music, and wintering in Weslaco, Texas for 8 years. Doris was known for her sense of humor, her positive outlook on life and always finding the good in any situation.

She is survived by her husband, Bob of Sleepy Eye; children, Wayne (Jacque) of Sleepy Eye, Marty (Jan) of Willmar, Patty (Lee) Bergstrom of Long Prairie, and Barb (Robert) Zimmerman of Mound; grandchildren, Jessica, Peter, Justin (Mandy), Jenny, Nick (Angie), and Andy Novotny, Ben (Amber) and Courtney Bergstrom, Josie and Jack Zimmerman; a great-granddaughter, Zoey Novotny; a sister, Carole Snyder of Nevada, and a brother, Robert Snyder of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lillian Snyder and a son, Carl Novotny.
