BOLD big inning sinks Cathedral

NEW ULM – The Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian-Danube Warriors scored seven runs in the third inning and Logan Sandgren pitched over five innings of hitless baseball as he led his team to victory over the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds 7-1 in the second round of the Section 2A, North Subsection playoffs Tuesday evening at Johnson Park.

The loss sends the Greyhounds to the consolation bracket, where they will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Cathedral freshman Gabe Knowles took the loss for the Greyhounds. He pitched a solid first two innings before being roughed up for seven runs in the third. Mike Hoffmann came on in relief and allowed just two hits in three-plus innings.

Sandgren allowed just two hits while striking out 11 batters in a complete game effort. Josh Kienlen broke up the no-hitter with a one-out infield single in the sixth inning. The second hit came when Knowles had an RBI double in the seventh.

Knowles didn’t have any problems going through the BOLD lineup the first time. However, the Warriors couldn’t be stopped the second time.

Lane Stadther scored on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game and the first out of the inning. After that the Greyhounds couldn’t buy an out.

Riley Kramer had an RBI double to right-center field that Brandon Beranek couldn’t run down, then Tyler Seehusen followed with an RBI double to left-center field. The very next batter, pitcher Sandgren helped his own cause as the powerful lefty sent one over the vine-covered fence in right field for a two-run homer to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead.

Knowles finally got a batter to fly out for the second out before BOLD got another run on a RBI double from Tyler Rock. Cathedral coach Bob Weier decided he had seen enough and brought in Mike Hoffmann to finish the inning.

“We have a lead-off hitter that hits a ground ball to our third basemen and he fails to make the play,” Weier said. “It’s a tough play, but it’s a play thats got to be made in the playoffs. If you don’t make the play then you lose. A little later in that half inning our right fielder takes a bad angle at a ball in the gap that’s a catchable ball. Same theory, you make plays like that in the playoffs then you win and if you don’t, you lose.”

“Those two plays opened up the inning for them. Gabe at times had pretty good control of his curveball, at times he didn’t have good control. I think his defense in that situation kind of let him down. It makes it awfully tough on a young pitcher when his defense doesn’t come up with plays.”

Cathedral’s only run came with one out in the seventh inning. With Beranek on base, Knowles belted one to deep right-center field where it short-hopped the fence and allowed Berenek to score all the way from first. Sandgren got the next batter to ground out and Jack Schwartz struck out to end the game.

No. 3 BOLD will advance to play No. 1 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Sleepy Eye.
