VFW Silver struggles against Hutchinson
NEW ULM – Michael Skillings’ first inning single was later changed to an error and Marcus Hahn went on to pitch a no-hitter in five innings as the Hutchinson 16s defeated New Ulm VFW Silver 15-0 Wednesday evening at Mueller Park.
Hahn also had three hits and six RBI, including a three-run home run. Every starter scored for Hutchinson and five players scored at least two runs while it pounded out 12 hits in the game.
Hutchinson scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, six in the fourth and four in the fifth. Hahn got the game started with an RBI single in the first inning for Hutchinson. In the second inning Hahn made solid contact as he drove in two runs to put his team up 5-0. In the fourth inning, Hahn doubled his RBI total with one swing of the bat. After the first two batters got on base, the No. 3 hitter got a hold of one for a home run and essentially put the dagger in New Ulm as Hutchinson jumped out to a huge lead. Hutchinson added four more runs in the fifth before Hahn finished his no-hitter.
“They are a solid team, they have played together a lot,” VFW Silver coach Bob Skillings said. “I think that we had some good things there, at times. Hitting wise we went deep in the count several times, so I think that was good. We had some good swings today. Defensively we need to work on where we are positioning ourselves and make better throws.”
“This is a good game to get our feet wet, to know where we are at. These players haven’t played together much in the past so they have to get used to each other. Early on in the season here we are practicing quite a bit, so I think we are going to keep improving.”
VFW Silver falls to 0-1 on the season.
