BOLD stifles St. Mary’s 6-0

SLEEPY EYE – It went from oh-no to no-no for the Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights baseball team Thursday night.

The BOLD Warriors scored in four of the seven innings while pitcher Riley Kramer threw a no-hitter on just 73 pitches as BOLD cruised past St. Mary’s 6-0 in Class A Section 2 playoff action.

The loss means the Knights slide into the loser’s bracket and will play at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato against a team to be determined.

“Kramer threw well,” Knights coach Bruce Woitas said. “They made the plays, played defense and caught some breaks. A lot of things went right for them and not for us. They came up with the clutch hits.”

Things didn’t start well for St. Mary’s as leadoff hitter Trent Athmann started the game with a triple to right for the Warriors. A Kramer grounder opened the scoring at 1-0. It became 2-0 on two walks, a wild pitch and a single to center by Athmann.

Kramer forced four grounders and got two strikeouts in his first two innings, before David Suprenaut opened the third by reaching on an error. A sacrifice bunt by Mike Hirsch and fly to right by Tyler Helget moved Suprenaut to third, but that would be the closest a St. Mary’s runner came to home plate all night.

The Warriors caught a lucky break when they loaded the bases in the fifth with a hit, walk and hit batter. Logan Sandgren hit the ball up the middle and it looked like the Knights might be able to turn a double play as shortstop Sean Mathiowetz had a bead on the ball.

But the ball hit the bad and careened towards third to score Athmann. Lane Stadther had overrun third base and was a sitting duck to be the first out. But an errant throw allowed him to score and BOLD extended their lead to 4-0.

The Knights Jon Kopacek led off the fifth inning with a walk, but any thoughts of a rally were quickly snuffed by a fielder’s choice and double play. Kramer mowed down the next six batters for the no-hitter and the Warriors advance to play in Mankato on Saturday at 11 a.m.
