Kirschstein no-hits MACCRAY as Tigers advance in 3A playoffs
GRANITE FALLS – Springfield’s Isaac Kirschstein pitched a no-hitter as the Tigers advanced in the Section 3AA baseball playoffs, defeating MACCRAY 10-0 Saturday afternoon.
Kirschstein led the way with six strikeouts in five innings as the Tigers improved to 19-4 on the season.
“Isaac was attacking the hitters,” Springfield coach Bob Fink said.?”He didn’t waste any pitches, he attacked the hitters and he had an above-average fastball today. His curveball and change-up were outstanding. They did not have on hard-hit ball the entire game.”
While Menage was on his game, the rest of the team was too.
“Our aggressiveness takes a lot of teams out of their game,” Fink said. “They got frustrated, we rattled their pitcher, and we were pretty much able to do what we wanted to do.”
Jake Menage was 2-for-3 with a double and Cole Milbrath was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Jake Vanderwerf was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
The Tigers didn’t have a big inning, but they were able to be aggressive on the base paths, stealing bases and bunting runners over. That helped them build and add to the lead.
The Tigers play Lac Qui Parle Valley at 5 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination bracket game in Marshall in Section 3AA action. LQPV defeated Springfield 2-1 earlier in the tournament.
“They beat us last year in the playoffs and they took second in the state last year, and they have pretty much the same team back,” Fink said. “We felt we outplayed them the last game and we had one bad inning, and that cost us. We hit the ball extremely well off of their ace pitcher, but right at people. We are definitely looking forward to this rematch and hopefully can come home with a win.”
