Blooming Prairie 3, New Ulm Cathedral 2

In game one, Cathedral failed to fend off the Section 1A champs from Blooming Prairie.

Anna Mohr started in the circle for Cathedral and made the top of the first quick, getting two strikeouts.

Mohr took the loss. She allowed six hits, three runs and she struck out six in four innings.

Blooming Prairie’s pitcher, Shelbi Swenson, answered with two strikeouts of her own and a fly out, leaving Cathedral with two stranded.

Swenson earned the win. She struck out 14in seven innings and allowed just three hits.

In the second inning, Blooming Prairie had a leadoff hit down the left field line, bouncing over the third baseman, MacKinnon Ehlenz, for a double. But Mohr got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Blooming Prairie grabbed a 1-0 lead when Sydney Heiber singled in a run.

In the fifth, the Blossoms scored two runs. Swenson singled to score Heiber to make it 2-0 and the next run came on a groundout by Ashley Krohnberg, who got an RBI on the play to put the Blossom up 3-0.

Cathedral answered with a run in the fifth with a solo home run by Leah Krzmarzick.

Lisa Helget then hit a 232-foot home run to left field, making the score 2-3. “We had our chances,” Cathedral Coach Bob Mertz said.

With the win, Swenson upped her record to 21-3.

NUC 4, Red Lake Falls 1

The Greyhounds came back and won in the consolation bracket, meaning they’ll play for fifth place today.

“It was a nice win for us, a very nice win,” Mertz said.

The Greyhounds got off to a slow start in the first game, but carried over that late momentum in the second game. In the third inning, Mackinnon Ehlenz started the top of third inning with a single to right center. Janessa Rothmeier and Helget both singled and Helget’s single put the Greyhounds up 1-0.

Karlee Pfaff singled to score Rothmeier, and then Anne Schwarz followed with a two-run home run to put the Greyhounds up 4-0 at that point.

Red Lake Falls scored a single run in the bottom of the third, and Krzmarzick earned the win for the Greyhounds. She went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run. She struck out one. Anna Mohr earned the save, retiring two batters and striking out one.

New Ulm Cathedral is set to play the Section 7A champions Cherry at 9 a.m. on Field 2 at Caswell Park today.
