Several potential Republican candidates for 1st District congress

ROCHESTER – Rep. Mike Benson is the first Republican candidate to announce a run for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District in 2014. But, the number of other Republicans also considering candidacy may create a crowded field for the Republican endorsement convention.

Mike Parry

Former. Sen. Mike Parry of Waseca, who ran for the 1st District last year, is considering another run against Walz. He said he is taking it slow to recover from a recent medical procedure, so he will make final decision in a month. He is weighing options for a run for either Secretary of State or governor.

Parry lost in particularly bitter primary race against former Rep. Allen Quist last year. Quist was eventually defeated by Walz by 15 points.

Al DeKruif

Former Sen. Al DeKruif of Madison Lake is considering making a decision on running for the First District by late July. He served in the Legislature from 2011 to 2012 under the Republican majority. He declined running for re-election after redistricting put him in the same district as Sen. Julie Rosen. of Fairmont.

Jim Hagedorn

Jim Hagedorn of Blue Earth, who ran for the Republican endorsement for the 1st District in 2006, is calling talks of a run “premature” but is not willing to rule it out. He was eliminated in the Republican endorsement process when he came in fourth with 16 percent of the votes. His father Tom Hagedorn served in the former Second District in the 1970s.

Aaron Miller

Aaron Miller of Byron is also considering a run. He serves as command sergeant major in the Army reserves and has received the Bronze Star. He works as Senior Hospital Account Manager for rEVO Biologics, a biotech firm.

More to come

Sources with direct knowledge of the race have identified at least two other Rochester citizens considering a run. Sources stated that they expect the final number of candidates who will join the race will depend on the reaction to each individual’s announcement.
