Council to consider Fire Department pensions, tobacco shop license
NEW ULM – The New Ulm City Council will meet today at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
NU Fire pensions
The Council will consider a proposal to increase the New Ulm Fire Department Relief Association pension benefit levels from $3,750 per year of service to $4,125 per year of service by 2016. Members of the Relief Association have requested the increase due to time commitment and responsibilities increasing over the years. There has not been a retirement benefit increase since 2009. The proposal will require the City to contribute $12,179 more annually by the final year.
The Council will consider approving the name transfer of the business interested in establishing a tobacco shop in the former New Ulm Smokes 4 Less building. Marshall’s Tobacco Inc, which would have operated under New Ulm Smoke Shop, was approved for a tobacco license with several requirements in April. Additional requirement were ordered over concerns that the owner had previously been arrested for selling synthetic marijuana.
The new business – Maroc Tobacco Inc., – which would operate under the name Smokes Plus, is reported to be run by the same owner. Because the license was not set to be issued until July, the Council has options for transferring the license.
The Council will review a report on survey of liquor license violation fines and penalties for several Minnesota communities compared to New Ulm. The survey will compare financial penalties and license suspensions
