Leonard J. Heuchert

Leonard J. Heuchert, 87 of Lee’s Summit, Mo., formerly of New Ulm and Good Thunder, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at East St. Luke’s Hospital in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

A Celebration of Len’s life will be held on June 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, New Ulm, with Pastor Grant Bode officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday to time of service at the church.

Leonard J. Heuchert, the son of Reverend Karl and Amanda (Lueker) Heuchert, was born on Nov. 21, 1925 in Henning. Leonard graduated from High School in Royalton. While working at The Lutheran Children’s Friend Society, he met Evelyn Marie Wiedenheft. Len and Ev were married Nov. 3, 1946 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Good Thunder.

Leonard owned and operated Wiedenheft’s Grocery Store in Good Thunder. Len was on the committee that started The Good Thunder Pioneer-Indian Day Celebration. He crowned the first Miss Good Thunder. Len started the St. John’s Lutheran Grade School Basketball Program as well as St. John’s Lutheran Grade School Basketball Tournament that ran for almost 40 years. He became a certified Fire Arm Safety Instructor for youth in the Good Thunder area. He was part of the Good Thunder Volunteer Fire Department, and a leader with the Boy Scouts of America. Len held many offices and was active on many committees at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Good Thunder.

Len sold the grocery store in 1969. He became a District Representative for Aid Association for Lutherans in New Ulm. Len moved his family to New Ulm in 1970. During his time with AAL, Len received numerous awards and qualified for the President’s Cabinet several times. Len retired from AAL in 1989. Len was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he held many offices and served on many committees.

Len married Beverly Ann Glaeser, in Lake of the Ozarks, MO on August 2, 2003. In 2004, Len and Bev moved to Gold Canyon, Ariz. and in 2007, they moved to Lees Summit, Mo.

Leonard was a man of faith who loved people and those who came in contact with him felt his love and concern.

Len is survived by his wife Beverly; his children John (Jean), Bruce (Lynn), and Carolyn, all of New Ulm, and L. Scott (Sue) of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Joleen (Todd) Woods, Yankton, SD, Jessica (T.J.) Fletcher, Eagan, Angela Liesenfeld, New Ulm, Mike Heuchert, Minneapolis, Josh Heuchert (fiance Kristy Engstrom), Osakis, Dan (Tiffany) Heuchert, Ashland, KY, David Heuchert (fiance Kali Burow), Alexandria, and 12 great-grandchildren. Len is also survived by Beverly’s children, Stephen (Donna) Moraco, Monument, Colo., Kim (Don) Davis, Lake Winnebago, Mo., Lise (Dale) Weegman, Hendricks; and her grandchildren, Steve A. Moraco, Savannah, Ga. , Matt Weegman, Starkville, Miss., Mitch (Kaitlin) Weegman, Falmouth, U.K. and Kate Weegman, Minneapolis, and his brother Lawrence (Carolyn) Heuchert, of Houston, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.

Len was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Evelyn; his sons – Michael and his twin; his Brothers – Vernon and Charles; and His Sisters – Esther Meichsner and Lorene Cordes.

Memorials to The Lutheran Hour, Billy Graham Evangelistic Assn. or the donor’s choice are preferred in lieu of flowers.
