NEW ULM – Mankato defeated New Ulm Silver 6-2 Wednesday night at Mueller Park in VFW baseball action.
The Royals took advantage of a walk and a single to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Cooper Forbrook singled, advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Forbrook scored on a sacrifice fly when Alex Guggisberg flied out to left field. Michael Skillings walked and he eventually tied the game at 2-2 on a throwing error by Mankato shortstop James Marti.
Later, Marti was hit by a pitch, stole second and Brett Taylor and Ryan Lieferman both walked to load the bases. Marti scored the eventual game-winning run when Charlie Starkson hit a fly ball for an out that scored Marti. Mankato added one more run to lead 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Mankato’s Matt Sevens hit a one-out single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch. The Royals had a hit-and-run play that resulted in one run scoring. A New Ulm outfielder dropped a fly ball that resulted in scoring Mankato’s final run of the game.
Silver put together a threat of its own in its part of the final inning. E.J. Berdan got a lead-off walk before Evan Atzenhofer struck out. After Jackson Reinarts walked, Spencer Landsteiner flew out to center field. Castillo’s walk loaded the bases, which bought Forbrook to the plate, but he struck out to end the game.
