Comeback falls short for VFW Silver
NEW ULM – Walks doomed New Ulm VFW Silver in its loss to St. James 8-6 Tuesday night at Mueller Park.
Alex Fisher was the losing pitcher for Silver, going five innings while giving up four earned runs on two hits and walking six. Fisher also struck out eight St. James batters.
Jackson Reinharts threw the remaining two innings in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.
Branson Peterson got the win for St. James, pitching 6 2/3 innings while David Bradley got the save.
New Ulm was led offensively by Wyatt Oelberg and Alex Guggisberg each producing two RBI apiece. Cooper Forbrook also had an RBI, and Michael Skillings had a double. New Ulm finished the game with eight hits.
St. James grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bradley scored.
St. James added to the lead with a four-run third inning. Bradley drove in Brody Halvorson and Peterson on a double to make it 3-0.
Bradley and Josh Stordahlen scored on a Jaren Skarphol fielder’s choice.
St. James also added runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and led 7-0 at that point.
Branson Peterson kept the New Ulm offense in check through five innings until a single by Oelberg scored Skillings and Forbrook to get Silver on the board in the sixth.
After St. James added another run, Silver rallied in the seventh with three straight singles from E.J. Berdan, Spencer Landsteiner, and Connor Giefer. A Forbrook groundout scored Berdan. After a Skillings walk, Guggisberg produced two runs on a two-out single. The rally was ended on a Evan Atzenhoefer groundout.
Silver returns to action at 6 p.m. at Wednesday at Wells.
