Sibley East tops VFW Silver

NEW ULM – An eight-run first inning proved too big of a hurdle for VFW Silver.

Five walks, two hit batters and one allowed hit between two pitchers accounted for those eight runs in Silver’s 12-2 loss to Sibley East VFW on Monday night at Mueller Park.

The pitching change in the first replaced Alex Fischer with Evan Atzenhoefer. Fischer allowed six of the eight runs and three of the five walks while accounting for both hit batters en route to being tagged with the loss.

“In this case, Alex basically told us he couldn’t get command of his pitches,” said Silver coach Bob Skillings.

Overall, Fischer threw 22 balls and eight strikes in his 1/3 of an inning pitched.

Skillings’ strategy for Monday’s game was to give all his pitchers some work for upcoming sub-district, but said it backfired after Fischer’s outing.

“It’s very easy to get down on yourself when you give up eight runs in the first inning,” said Alex Guggisberg. “It’s just mental.”

Despite the discouraging start, Silver did not go down without scoring two runs in the third inning in the form of RBI singles by Guggisberg and Michael Skillings.

However, Sibley East commanded most of the game, netting four more runs to enact the mercy rule at the end of five innings.

“We have the playoffs coming up on Thursday, and it’s not quite what I was looking for with my team tonight,” Skillings said. “There are a few players that I think really didn’t come to play ball tonight.”

Skillings said it also did not help that a couple Silver players were under the weather, forcing the team to suit the minimum nine required to play.

VFW Silver will head to sub-districts against Wells on Thursday in Blue Earth.

“We’re just going to try and forget this game and go after Wells this next game,” Guggisberg said. “We’ll try and take them down.”
