German Camp fosters joy of language

NEW ULM – The German Language Camp kicked off Monday at Martin Luther College with an emphasis on teaching children the joy of learning another language.

Michelle Malecha, who was recently selected as New Ulm’s 2013 representative for the Hans Joohs Exchange Program, led the class. She taught common German phrases and German songs to the children. She was assisted by fellow volunteer Heather Tischbirek. Both women are from Henderson.

Because Malecha will be teaching languages when she travels to Germany for the Hans Joohs program, leading this class proved to be a good experience. She said it was a great way for her to begin teaching after graduating from Minnesota State University-Mankato last December with a degree in German studies and a minor in history.

The class will continue through Friday. A special event is planned for Friday in which the children will demonstrate their new language skills.

New Ulm Sister Cities Commission sponsors the camp.
