Wood named New Ulm Retail Development Coordinator

NEW ULM – The New Ulm Retail Development Corporation has named Michelle Wood as its new Retail Development Coordinator.

Wood, who grew up in Mankato and currently lives in Minneapolis, started the job on Monday. She plans on relocating to New Ulm soon.

The job of the Retail Development Coordinator is to recruit new retail businesses to New Ulm, to help retain existing businesses, and to help promote the development of retail in New Ulm.

Wood brings a diverse background to the position, with pieces that fit into the demands of the job, she said.

Growing up in Mankato, Wood is familiar with the area. She attended the University of Notre Dame where she got her undergraduate degree, and later earned a master’s degree in architecture at the University of Minnesota. Between the degrees she started in business with Green Mill Enterprises in the Twin Cities, working in management and marketing.

With her architecture degree she also studied historic preservation issues, and most recently worked with Urban Works Architecture in Minneapolis, a firm that specializes in multi-family housing and urban development.

She has also worked as an adjunct professor in the Urban and Regional Studies Institute at Minnesota State University at Mankato, and has worked as a consultant for advertising and marketing firms in Minneapolis.

Wood said she heard about the position and found the combination of duties, involving marketing, development in a historic district, and business development very appealing. It also gives her a chance to move closer to family in Mankato.

After a day and a half on the job, Wood said she has a lot of work ahead to develop strategies and contacts, but she sees New Ulm as a city full of opportunities for retailers.

“It’s a charming town that has preserved its character very well. It has a unique heritage to build on, and a tremendous amount of community spirit and enthusiasm.”
