NU Council approves Hermann Heights event
NEW ULM – The New Ulm City Council approved several requests Tuesday for the Double Anniversary Celebration at Hermann Heights Park on Sept. 7, which will mark the 125th anniversary of the Hermann Monument Cornerstone and the 150th anniversary of the New Ulm Battery.
The approved requests allow the sale of food and alcohol at Hermann Heights during the event and the firing of cannons and fireworks from the site.
City Hall Condenser
The Council approved seeking bids for a new condenser and air conditioning unit for City Hall. It will replace a 20-year-old, obsolete unit with an energy efficient model. The project could cost up to $50,000, and it was included in the city budget.
MLC modified TIF
The Council granted a modification of the TIF district for Doneff Companies, LLC apartment housing complex project for Martin Luther College 1520 Sunset Ave. The Council approved the allowance of TIF in April. The modification ensures the final details of the complex are properly accounted for in the TIF.
The proposed complex will have 50-units aimed at senior housing and MLC alumni. The TIF agreement will require that 20 percent of the units be rented to people making less than 50 percent of the Brown County median income.
German Street two-hour parking
The Council approved establishing two-hour parking on the north half of the west side of German Street between 1st North and Center Street. The request was made by New Ulm Furniture Company.
DARE fund closing postponed
The Council tabled the proposal to close the DARE fund and transfer its account balance of $59,570 to the general fund. Character Counts has replaced DARE, which sought to prevent drug use by juveniles.
Councilor Les Schultz said he supported the end of DARE, but he wanted to wait to make sure funding for Character Counts was available for the coming school year. He also wanted to know if other longer-term programs were available that could use DARE funds.
