SUNfest 5k draws crowd

NEW ULM – More than 200 people took part in the inaugural SUNfest 5k Run-Walk and related events Sunday morning in and around Washington Park.

“We really got lucky with the weather,” said event director Karen Domeier. “We had lots of volunteers that were very helpful with setup. Some of them walked or ran too. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Sleepy Eye ultra-marathon runner John Maas won the 3.1 mile race in 18:57. Following were Mark Sponholz 19:15, Russ Weier 19:37, Anthony Rosenhamer 21:34, Jerry Stoffel 21:39, Sally Richert 21:43, Gail Boe 22:03, Darrell Palmer 22:05, Rev. Matthew Wiering 22:09, Dan Rosenhamer 22:15, Chris Wenner 22:29, Mark Weinkauf 22:29, Russel Wiltscheck 22:34 and Jeremy Pollock 22:54.

Participants received gift bags including t-shirts, a Bavarian Blast ticket, healthy snacks, water, Post-It notes, Lip Ice, gum, coupons and other items.

This is the first year New Ulm Area Catholic Schools has held the run, which will provide scholarships for NUACS students. The run has been part of New Ulm’s summer festivals for many years, dating back to the Alte Post Lauf 10K and two-mile run held during Heritagefest.

It was first organized in the 1980s by the Brown County Historical Society, who have their museum in the old New Ulm Post Office. Later it became the Heritagefest Run, and the Bavarian Blast 5K, organized by New Ulm Medical Center and Allina.

SUNfest events in Washington Park included kids fun runs and relays, and face painting.

Local organizers are glad to keep the race going to establish New Ulm as a place for healthy lifestyles, said committee member Mary Jane Glawe, and to show off New Ulm’s scenic beauty.
