MLC to host WELS convention
NEW ULM – Approximately 500 Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) members will meet July 29 through Aug. 1 at Martin Luther College for the WELS 62nd biennial convention.
Pastors, teachers, staff ministers and lay members will gather to hear reports of the work the synod is doing as an international church body and to discuss a wide variety of topics regarding WELS ministry and operations.
WELS President Mark Schroeder explains the importance of this weeklong meeting. “Since the convention is the ultimate decision-making body in our synod, its actions should be considered important by every member of the synod. Resolutions adopted by the convention provide the direction and scope of the ministry we carry out as a synod. Often those decisions have far-reaching and long-range impact,” says Schroeder.
The convention opens Monday, July 29, at 6 p.m. with a worship service in Chapel of the Christ.
Presiding Minister President Mark Schroeder and the Rev. Michael Shultz will be joined by singers and instrumentalists from area WELS churches.
The theme for this year’s convention “In Christ Alone” was chosen because it encompasses the synod’s foundation and focus of its mission and ministry.
WELS is the third largest Lutheran church body in the U.S.. It has approximately 1,300 churches in 49 states and 390,000 members. It carries out mission work in 23 countries around the world.
