Vernon H. Rolloff
NEW ULM – Vernon H. Rolloff, 93, of New Ulm passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 29 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-10 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. The St. Joseph/St. Elizabeth Catholic United Council and the St. Patrick’s Council Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Vernon was born May 25, 1920 in Milford Township to Herman and Oralia (Lambrecht) Rolloff. He attended school in Milford Township and graduated from New Ulm High School. He married Alice Seifert on Sept. 11, 1941 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Pacific with the 302nd Naval Construction Battalion. Vernon was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the St. Joseph/St. Elizabeth Catholic United Council, and the Knights of Columbus. He worked for the Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company and the Del Monte Corporation. He later worked for the Essig Community Co-op Oil Co. for 29 years. Many children on his route knew him as “the gum man.” He then worked for New Ulm Telecom until retiring in 1982.
Vernon is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Vicky Rolloff of New Ulm; daughter-in-law, Karen Rolloff of New Ulm; grandchildren, Jason of Minneapolis, Ryan and his friend, Vanny, of Norwood Young America, Nathan and his wife, Heather, of Arden Hills; and one great grandchild, Sydney. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Jannie Rolloff of St. Cloud, Calvin and Jean Rolloff of Moline, Illinois, and Gene and Joanie Rolloff of New Ulm; sisters and brother-in-law, Lorna Mangen of Delano, Irene and Anton Van Overbeke of Ocala, Florida; and sisters-in-law, Delores Schugel and Irene Seifert, both of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice, in September 2008; and son, Ronald, in March 2006. In lieu of flowers, his family prefers memorials to the donor’s choice.
