Sleepy Eye defeats New Ulm in 2C baseball playoffs
SLEEPY EYE – The Sleepy Eye amateur baseball team bounced back from its 10-inning pitcher’s duel loss to Lamberton with a 5-4 victory against New Ulm on Sunday in the Region 2C playoffs.
The Indians stringed together two one-run innings to take an early 2-0 lead before the Brewers dinged in three runs in the fourth to nab a 3-2 lead. Those runs were courtesy of an RBI single by Zach Hoffmann that drove in Wade French from second base, as well as a two-run triple by Drew Pfaff that drove in Hoffmann and Chris Peters from first and second.
The Brewers tacked another run on the board thanks to Brady Ranweiler’s RBI double to left field that drove in Aaron Pfaff in the top of the fifth inning.
The Indians answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Andrew Woitas came in from second thanks to a throwing error by Brewers third baseman Landon Rewitzer before Scott Salfer drove in Jake Bohnen and John Mangen drove in Alan Woitas.
Alan Woitas got the win for the Indians, allowing four runs off six hits while striking out three and walking one in six solid innings of work.
Zach More took the loss for the Brewers, allowing nine hits and five runs in eight innings.
Sleepy Eye resumes action in the Region 2C playoffs at Springfield, while New Ulm will play Leavenworth. Both games will start at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
