First-timer wins multiple awards at Brown County 4-H Swine Show

NEW ULM – Mallory Drake, 9, of Comfrey, won four ribbons in the 4-H Swine Show: Champion Market Gilt, Reserve Champion Market Gilt, Reserve Champion Barrow and Champion of Pen 3.

Drake’s accomplishments are particularly impressive since this is her first year officially competing. Her only prior claim to fame was being part of feature photograph on the cover of Iowa Pork Producers Magazine earlier this year.

She said her success came from doing the hard work of sticking with the routine of cleaning, feeding and exercising the pigs. She said she finds 4-H to be incredibly fun as a competitive activity.

“It’s really fun! I like being with the animals and working on them,” said Drake.

She said she plans to just stick with pigs for competitions because she finds them more enjoyable to work with than other animals. She said she is already looking forward to many more years with 4-H.
